Made in Hong Kong:

Our City, Our Stories

Between September 2014 and April 2015, the Department of Visual Studies, Lingnan University has collaborated with the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and Globe Creative Ltd. to develop service-learning projects in two undergraduate courses, including “Collecting Chinese Art” and “Understanding Museums”. Students from each course assisted in different areas of curatorial and educational work for the special exhibition of Made in Hong Kong: Our City, Our Stories being held at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum from 6 March to 4 September 2015.

Project Outcomes

  1. New Displays and Education Services for the Made in Hong Kong Exhibition
    • Interviews collected from each group of students are selected and edited for final inclusion in the exhibition.
    • Students are given opportunities to assist in office work, school tours, family activities, art and crafts workshops, corporate events and other public programmes through the Volunteer Programme.

  2. Knowledge Transfer
    • Selected students have shared their service-learning experience with a wide audience, including the exhibition sponsor and the curatorial team, through interviews and presentations.
    • Textual and visual documentation of the whole service-learning process and project outcomes are presented in this webpage, conferences and other publications for educational purposes.

  3. Resume Development

    • Students and alumni of Lingnan University have gained work experience at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and Globe Creative Ltd. Some of them continue to volunteer for the Museum, while others have undertaken other internships and part-time jobs in related fields.

  4. Life-transforming Personal Development

    • Students are benefitting from the teamwork experience, new exposure and enhanced transferrable skills. The Made in Hong Kong exhibition has deepened their understanding of the social, economic and cultural history of Hong Kong.
    •  Students are nurtured with a positive attitude towards art, museums and community engagement. Some of them have even considered this fruitful service-learning experience a milestone in their university life.
